Municipality of Oeiras
Oeiras is known for its historical heritage, natural beauty, and wine-making tradition dating back to the 18th century. Despite being one of the most urban municipalities in the metropolitan region, Oeiras preserves wine tourism gems of enormous cultural and gastronomic value, such as the famous Carcavelos Wine, one of the oldest wines in Portugal.
Just 17 km from the center of Lisbon, about 15 to 20 minutes by car, the Marquês de Pombal Palace in Oeiras is now the epicenter of this unique wine experience, combining history, culture, and flavor.
In this article, we explore the possibilities of wine tourism in Oeiras: visits to historic wineries, gastronomic experiences, wine festivals with specific dates, and all the practical information you need to book your experience.
The History of Wine in Oeiras and the Legacy of Carcavelos
In the 18th century, under the leadership of the Marquis of Pombal, Carcavelos wine production gained international renown. This DOC fortified wine, similar in prestige to Port and Madeira, won over the European aristocracy with its complexity and longevity.
For years, production was almost extinct, but a visionary project brought it back into the spotlight: Villa Oeiras.
Villa Oeiras Project
Villa Oeiras is an initiative of the Oeiras City Council in partnership with the National Agronomic Station, with the objectives of recovering historic vineyards such as those of Quinta de Cima do Marquês, restoring century-old wineries such as Casal da Manteiga, producing excellent fortified wines under the Villa Oeiras brand, and offering immersive wine tourism experiences such as guided tours, tastings, workshops, and cultural events.
Thanks to this project, Oeiras has once again become part of the route of the great Portuguese wines.
