There are place names that tell a story before we even arrive. Arruda dos Vinhos is one of them.
Vineyards are part of the landscape and of the identity of this municipality just outside Lisbon. And perhaps that is precisely why the best way to discover Arruda is not to visit a single winery, taste three wines and move on. You need to give it time.
This autumn, there is a great opportunity to do just that.
Between 17 October and 12 December 2026, the Na Rota do Vinho programme takes us to six local producers, each offering a different experience. There is grape harvesting and traditional grape stomping, walks through the vineyards, tastings accompanied by regional products, and even a morning where wine, heritage and equestrian tradition come together on the same estate.
This is not a wine route to be done in a single day. And that is exactly as it should be.

Na Rota do Vinho 2026 is organised by the Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos in partnership with local producers. The idea is simple: on different Saturdays, a winery or producer welcomes a small group for an experience connected to wine and the region.
Instead of bringing all the wineries together in a tasting hall, the programme does the opposite.
We go to meet them.
And there is an important difference between tasting a wine at a fair and tasting it after walking through the vineyard where it all began. The landscape gains context. Names become more than just names on a label. And many of the questions that naturally arise inside a winery would hardly come up during a conventional tasting.
It is this connection with the place that makes the programme particularly interesting for anyone looking for wine tourism in Arruda dos Vinhos that goes beyond a simple tasting.

Arruda dos Vinhos integra a zona de
Denominação de Origem Controlada
DOC Arruda, as quintas e as
adegas abrem as suas portas para que os
visitantes possam ser transportados
para eras remotas, observando os
testemunhos indeléveis da passagem dos
povos.

The first visit, on 17 October, brings back one of the oldest and most recognisable traditions of winemaking: grape stomping.
At Casa do Remoinhal, participants are invited to experience this tradition before the wine tasting and sampling of regional products.
We are used to encountering wine already bottled, served at the right temperature and explained through grape varieties, aromas and vintages. Here, for a moment, we return to the beginning. To the grapes, the work and a tradition that, for generations, was part of the Portuguese harvest season.
The experience costs €20, is limited to 20 participants and requires a minimum of ten people. Registration is open until 7 October. At the end of the experience, participants receive a 20% discount on wine purchases.
One week later, the route continues precisely where every wine begins: in the vineyard.

To understand what makes this wine route so interesting, we need to look beyond the dates.
Arruda dos Vinhos is a region with a strong winemaking tradition and is part of the DOC Arruda. The municipality’s own programme presents the vineyards and producers as an essential part of the region’s identity, inviting visitors to explore its hills and valleys and discover its local wines.
It is a connection that begins with the name but does not end there.
Visiting different producers helps us understand that a designation of origin is not an abstract concept printed on a label. It is a real place. It has roads, hillsides, vineyards, wineries and people.
And each producer interprets this territory in their own way.
That is precisely why visiting a single estate tells us one story, while exploring several begins to reveal an entire wine region.
All experiences require advance registration and have limited capacity.
According to the official programme, bookings must be made through the Educational and Cultural Service of the Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos. After making contact, participants will receive instructions regarding booking and payment and should wait for confirmation. Payment is made directly to each producer.
Educational and Cultural Service — Centro Cultural do Morgado
Phone: 263 112 502
Email: servicoeducativo@cm-arruda.pt
For further information about the destination, the programme also provides the contact details of the Arruda dos Vinhos Tourist Office:
Phone: 263 977 035

But in wine tourism, simplicity is far from meaning a lack of interest.

Quite the opposite.

Walking through a vineyard before tasting the wine helps us put it in its proper context. We observe the land, the terrain and the orientation of the plots. We gain a sense of distances and scale that no photograph can fully convey.

Then, when the wine finally reaches the glass, we already know a little more about the place it came from.

The experience costs €15, welcomes up to 40 participants and requires registration by 21 October. Participants also receive a 20% discount on wine purchases at the end of the visit.

After three Saturdays in October closely connected to the vineyards and the harvest, November brings a rather different experience.

Sebastião, on 21 November, is probably the most comprehensive experience on the programme.

And not just because of the tasting.

The morning includes a visit to the Chapel, Old Winery, Stables, Vineyards and Riding Arena, followed by a tasting of regional products and a dressage performance.

It is precisely this kind of visit that reminds us why we like to talk about wine tourism rather than simply wine tasting.

An estate can tell several stories at the same time. The vineyard is one of them, but there is also architecture, heritage, animals, traditional ways of working the land and different generations that have left their mark on the same place.

In this case, it is worth arriving with time to spare.

The experience costs €20 per person, with a maximum of 40 participants and a minimum of 20 required. Registration must be completed by 2 November. At the end of the visit, participants can benefit from a 37% discount on wine purchases.

Registration closes on 2 December and, at the end of the visit, participants receive a 20% discount on wine purchases.

By the time this final visit takes place, almost two months will have passed since the first grape-stomping experience at Casa do Remoinhal.

And perhaps it is this sense of time that best sets the programme apart.

This is not a race through six producers. We can choose the one that sparks our curiosity the most, or return several times and experience Arruda as autumn gradually gives way to winter.
